I enjoy juxtaposing the human body with ornamental structures and patterns. Currently this includes stern deity like portraits and structures created from a variety of architectural and ornamental subjects. I find the combination of humanity being bonded to a structure or place vary interesting. I think of people attaching themselves to institutions; be it physical or philosophical allowing those institutions to define them. I think of these attachments as a tribal allegiance. I am "x" so I cannot be "y". With these tribal identities we create divisions in our reality that define and restrict the potential experiences and interactions we can have. Those tribal barriers may be liminal or last a life time.
This portfolio develops from a visual metaphor emphasizing form, to a more solid realization of an abstract body. Themes include body image, gender identity, the male gaze, and violence; via self hate, and body editing. These themes are juxtaposed with rich ornamentation and a playful treatment of the surface by utilizing a mixed media approach.
